Dugga Dugga…

Durga Puja: also referred to as Durgotsava or Sharadotsav is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga.

Dugga: Durga in some versions of Bengali language.

After tackling the frustrated crowd inside the brutally packed bus, I finally reached the bus stop near my home. As I got down, I looked up and thanked God for delivering me alive yet another day. As I waded past the wild pandal hopping crowd, I saw a gorgeous looking girl. Clad in an eye grabbing blue saree, she was going towards one of the big and famous pandals of my locality. I took out my cellphone and called my father and told him I was still stuck in the traffic. As I followed her totally enchanted by her beauty, I had an eerie feeling that I had seen her somewhere before. As she went inside and stood in front of the idol with folded hands I tried to get as close as possible. ‘Dugga dugga…’ She had a melodic voice. She stood there with her eyes closed and folded hands close to her face while I kept walking in her direction to talk with her. I stood by her side, closed my eyes and folded my hands thanking the almighty when suddenly someone whispered in my ear, ‘I am still waiting for your call!’ Thunderstruck, I opened my eyes. But to my horror she was not there anymore. I turned around and saw her leaving the pandal. She turned around and winked naughtily at me. And then I realized.
Darn! It was the girl in purple jeans…

Happy Durga Puja to everyone… 🙂

Letting Go…

Have you ever experienced an empty feeling inside you and everything suddenly feels bleak and life appears gloomy? Have you ever had that feeling when you have too much to share but you don’t have the right words to describe anything? Sometimes it may also happen that no matter how hard we try to let go of something the entire universe tries its best to bring it back in our lives. Maybe it’s written in our fate or it’s decided in the heavens. Life is unfathomable when it comes to certain things like love. And no matter how hard we try, things are meant to get screwed up but one thing I have realized that there comes a time when we truly become oblivious of everything and that is the time when something remarkable happens once again. And these surprises leave a person changed completely for the rest of his or her life. There is absolutely nothing anyone can do about them. When something is not meant to happen, it won’t happen no matter how hard we try.

‘So you are coming right?’ She asked him as she looked into the mirror.
‘I am not sure whether I will….’ She stopped him in the middle of his sentence.
‘I don’t want to listen to any of your excuses! You are coming and that’s final.’ She was adamant as always.
‘Alright, I will be there.’ He disconnected the line and looked at the picture hanging on the wall. He got up and went near it. The picture was taken somewhere in a hill resort. The memory of the smiling people in the photograph suddenly brought tears in his eyes. He wiped his tears and looked outside the window. The clouds in the sky drifted slowly and so did his mind which was heavy with memories. Once happy memories but now painful ones…

‘You are coming right?’ She asked him while packing her bag pack with woolen clothes. ‘It won’t be the same without you!’ She spoke in her super cute voice. ‘I will definitely come. I can’t miss this opportunity to be with you. Don’t know when we will see each other again after this!’ He replied excitedly. ‘I love you!’ She said as her roommate whistled naughtily. ‘I love you too!’ He said with a smile on his face. Then he ran towards his best friend’s room. He needed money badly as vacation in a hill station costs a lot of money.

He again looked at the picture hanging on the wall. And then he gazed across the room. He had a well-furnished bungalow but he lived all by himself. Once, he didn’t have hundred rupees in his pocket. But nowadays his name came up in leading magazines and newspaper whenever he made a donation in any charity trust.

‘It’s so cute!’ She exclaimed with joy as he handed her the small white teddy bear holding a heart with her name on it. ‘I love you so so so much!’ She kissed and hugged him tightly.

He looked at the small Buddha statue on his study table. His mind got flooded with memories once again.

‘Keep it with you. It will protect you from all sorts of problem.’ She put the small statue in his hand. She was wearing a beautiful Salwar Kameez that day and looked like a princess. He grinned while he pocketed it quickly and pulled her towards him. ‘You are a very bad boy!’ She blushed as they kissed.

He looked at the beautifully decorated card lying on the couch. He held back his tears. A chill went down his spine as he suddenly remembered her crying face. The only thing he hated more than his loneliness was her tears.

He dressed up and left his home in the evening.

“Now that you are gone, just wanna be with you. And I can’t go on, I wanna be with you…”

He turned off the music player as he entered the place. It was her favorite song. As soon as he left his car, suddenly he found himself amidst a group of completely unknown people. He roamed about the place with a slender glass of whiskey searching for her. Finally she appeared with a few friends of her. She was dressed magnificently and was covered with exotic jewelry. She looked at him and smiled. He couldn’t help but force a smile on his face.
A feeling of helplessness had descended on him but he maintained his composure and held his ground till the wedding got over.
Finally unable to hold back his tears he rushed outside. He took a deep breath and looked at the sky as firecrackers brightened up the sky.
He smiled. He had finally let her go. Forever…

The Girl in Purple Jeans…

Thuk thak thuk thak…

An aroma spread across the rotting metallic bus as she walked towards me. I was still looking outside the window lost in thoughts when she took the seat beside me. I looked in her direction but froze in the act. ‘Pa…paa…parapa…’ She was humming some tune while listening to music on her foot-long cellphone. Her jet black hair extended upto her waist and she occasionally ran her slender fingers through it. Her face shone brightly and her lips complimented it in more than one way. Her ear rings were tiny hearts and they swayed with the moving bus. Apart from her well-proportioned body, the most striking feature was her purple jeans. She looked at me and asked, ‘Kichu bolbe?’ (Do you wanna say something?) Embarrassed, I shifted my gaze and replied with a gulp, ‘Na na…’ She smiled and I almost had a cardiac-arrest. I looked away and clutched the seat handle tightly.

Just then the bus took a sharp turn and her lips and nose grazed over my face. Her hair, apart from tickling my nose, smelled like fresh flowers in the garden. The passengers cursed the driver and his choddo gushti (lineage) for his rash driving but we kept staring at each other. ‘Kichu bolbe? I am sorry!’ She smiled again but this time the crimson hue on her face had amplified her cuteness thousand folds. ‘It’s okay!’ I was still going short on words and felt stupid inside. ‘Dada ticket ta katun!’ The conductor grinned ear to ear as he asked me for the ticket. As I gave him two ten rupees bill, he returned one of them back to me and said, ‘Khuzro din! Dui taka khuzro din!’ (Give me two rupees change!). I checked my wallet and found nothing apart from a hundred rupees note and my debit card. The girl noticed it and said, ‘Ami diye dicchi!’ (I will give!) ‘Thanks a lot!’ I felt rather embarrassed accepting money from her. The conductor kept grinning and I felt like swiping my debit card across his lips. He gave my ticket to her.

‘It’s okay!’ She replied. One minute passed and neither of us said anything except looking outside the window.

‘My stop has come! See ya…!’ She put the ticket in my hand, got up and waved at me. I waved back. As she got down, suddenly I felt ‘Dhur! Kichu bolle bhalo hoto!’

(Darn! Should have said something to her!)

I looked at the ticket. Her number was written on it.

Mr. Paradox and His Talking Mirror Part I

It was still raining when he reached his home. He took off his coat and glared at the mirror hanging on the wall. He saw his reflection and looked away.
‘How was your day?’ The man in the mirror asked him. ‘You tell me!’ He gave a stern look and banged his fist on the wall.

‘Relax! You need to control yourself or else you will never get what you want!’ The reflection grinned and peered at him.
‘Why didn’t things go like they were meant to be?’ He asked with tears in his eyes.
‘That’s life, my friend!’ The grin had vanished.
‘I am not a bad person! You know that, don’t you?’ He asked the mirror in an inquisitive voice.
‘It doesn’t matter! Your actions make you the person you really are.’ The reflection replied.
He took out her picture from his wallet. A big drop of tear fell on it and he wiped it with his thumb.
‘I will never forget her face, her smile, her voice, her touch….’ He walked away from the mirror.
The reflection vanished along with him.
To be continued…

Whispers in the Dark… A Different Story…

Tick tock tick tock…

The sound of the wall clock reached his ears while he turned towards her. The bed was too small for them and it creaked every time somebody turned or moved just like the door of the rented apartment where they were living together for the last two months. He found it difficult to fall asleep and kept checking his watch. He had a night shift and he hated his job for he never found much time for her. She was still finishing her post-graduation but loved him wholeheartedly. He tried to look at her face closely through the darkness while her warm breath fell on his unshaven face. Her perfectly shaped lips quivered as she dreamed in her sleep with her hand around him and her leg intertwined with his. She looked even more beautiful and adorable while she slept and he usually found it difficult to sleep without cuddling with her. It had become a habit for him. She was always there in one corner of his mind no matter where he was and what he did. They were in love and they were happy.

He closed on her and kissed her lips. He found it electrifying and he kissed her again. ‘Mmm…’ She mumbled in her sleep. Soon her lips had parted to make way for his. She pulled his head towards her and kissed him passionately. She was wide awake now.

‘I was dreaming about you.’ She whispered and smiled. He put his hand around her and rubbed his nose with hers. ‘You look irresistible when you are dreaming!’ He smiled back. ‘I miss you every damn day!’ He could feel her loneliness vicariously through her words. Tears glided down her warm cheeks. He wiped her tears.

It was the perfect dilemma for a working individual. He knew that there was nothing else he could do. Even she understood everything. Love is something to sacrifice and even wait for if required.

‘I love you sweetheart!’ He whispered in her ear and kissed her forehead. ‘I love you more!’ She put her hands behind his head and united their lips again…

The Butterfly…

She woke up and looked outside the window to catch a glimpse of the rising sun. She checked the time- 6 am. She was putting on her jogging shoes when her eyes got stuck at a date circled with red on the calendar. “God! The day has come near so fast.” She thought. After that she head out with a smile on her face.

She took the usual route, the road around the lake and across the park. After jogging for almost an hour, she stopped near a wooden bench. An old man was reading newspaper.

“Is this seat taken?” She asked politely.

“Not at all dear!” He replied after stealing a glance. He was in his sixties, retired and with a head full of grey hair. He was dressed in a brown coat with matching pants and kept an old umbrella beside him.

“I see you here every single day.” She looked at his calm face.

“This used to be our spot. She is no more but I keep coming here every morning just to reminisce about the old times.” He answered with a tinge of sadness.

“I would love to hear about her if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all. I must say, you remind me of her.” He replied adjusting his spectacles. She blushed after hearing his last sentence.

“We met in the most unusual way and at the most unexpected time. I was running some errand when I saw her for the first time in this very place reading my favorite book. We started talking and soon became very good friends. She loved sunrises and butterflies. In no time our friendship turned into love and I confessed about my feelings one rainy afternoon. She had kissed me under the umbrella.” He laughed and patted the handle of his umbrella.

“Soon we got married and she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. But our happy days were short lived and she passed away after a year.” His eyes grew misty. Tears welled up in her eyes too.

“My angel never gave me any trouble. She was a God sent child. She has grown into a fine lady and she is getting married tomorrow.” His face brightened up. “I just pray to God that she gets all the happiness in the world.”

“She will. I am pretty sure!” She came near him.

“I just want her to spread her wings and fly away like a butterfly.” He looked at the sky with dreamy eyes.

“I am sure she will miss you a lot. She is very lucky to have a father like you” She held his frail hand and smiled.

He took out an old book from his coat pocket and put it in her hand.

“I want you to keep it safe for me. It belonged to my sweetheart.”

“I will. I surely will.” She hugged the old man and started crying like a child.

“I love you dad. I love you so much.”

“I love you too dear.” The old man closed his eyes as tears rolled down his face.Image

A Tale of True Love…

The recess bell rang and all the students rushed outside their classes with their tiffin boxes. One of the boys dropped his box in the rush. As he picked up his soiled box he saw a girl looking at him.

“Here, you can have share my tiffin.” She had a ponytail and had chubby and rosy cheeks.

“It’s okay! You don’t have to do that.” The boy replied shyly.

“Just take it!” She pressed again.

“Okay! Thank you.” He smiled. He was really famished. After that day, they always had their lunch together.

“God, I don’t think I will be able to do it!” He banged his pen on his notebook and looked away.

“You just need to be patient.” She patted his shoulder.

“I feel lost. I wish there was an easy way out.” He pushed his books away and rested his head on her lap.

“You are such a cry baby.” She smiled and pulled his ear.

“This is the best place I ever will be. Close to you. With you!”

“Really? If you don’t study I will vanish from your life!” She said in a fake angry voice.

“Please don’t do that. Exams are already making my life miserable. You are the only reason I feel sane!” He kissed her thigh and closed his eyes. She blushed and bit her lower lip.

“All of this will come to pass soon.” She drove her fingers across his hair. He loved it.

It was the night of the college farewell. Everyone rejoiced in every possible manner and in every possible place. They decided to walk away from the crowd.

“You know, I got a marriage proposal today. It’s the third one this month.” She said in a worried tone.

He put his hands around her and said, “Call it off!”

“Why should I?” She arched her eyebrows.

“Because, I was going to ask you to marry me!” He replied calmly. She tensed up immediately.

“My parent won’t…” He put a finger on her lips.

“Just say yes!” He looked straight into her eyes.

“Yes!” She closed her eyes and hugged him.

“You are still a little girl from inside.” He smiled and hugged her back. “And I will always love and take care of you no matter what!”

He rushed inside the hospital and nearly fell face down on the sanitized floor.

“Where is she?” He asked the receptionist who was answering two phone calls at the same time.

“Last room to the left.” He bolted towards the room. He opened the door with tears in his eyes and sweat dripping from his brows.

She looked at him with dreamy eyes and a smile on her face, while he held their daughter in his arms.

“She is gorgeous.” He looked at her.

“She really is. After all, she’s our daughter.” She chuckled.

He gently placed her in the crib and held his wife’s hand.

“Please stay with me!” She pleaded.

“I will!” He kissed her forehead.

It had started to rain outside.

The Boyfriend Experience… Final Chapter

They walked for a while talking about various stuff. She had left the teddy bear and the greeting cards in the cab. After sometime, they reached the lake park again. They reached the same spot where she had met him.

“I had the most wonderful time of my life today.” She held his hand in hers.

“Me too!” He smiled. “So tell me, how was the boyfriend experience?”

“It was freaking awesome. You should get the best boyfriend in the universe award.” They laughed in unison.

“And you should get the crown for the most beautiful woman I have ever met!” He put his hands around her waist and pulled her towards him. His face was now inches away from hers and she could feel his breath on her face. His nose touched her cheek. She closed her eyes and waited for their lips to unite.

“I should leave now. Three hours are over.”

“What the….!” She opened her eyes and looked at him.

“Take care and enjoy life. See you around!” He winked and started walking away.

“Answer one thing before you leave. Who was the girl in the church?”

“She is my ex-girlfriend. We broke up two weeks ago!” He kept walking.

Her jaw nearly dropped on the ground. She turned around and started walking in the direction of her home.

“Damn!” She thought. “It’s over. Again!”

She put her hands in her jacket pockets. There was a small piece of paper in one of them. She took it. There was a name and a phone number written on it. She smiled.

“It’s not over, yet!”

The Boyfriend Experience #2

“Let’s begin with a casual date!” He said. They were soon standing outside a cafeteria. They ordered coffee for themselves.

“So what do you do for living?” He took a sip.

“I am a web-designer and work for a small IT firm. What about you?”

“I am a model.” He took another a sip.

“No wonder I can’t take my eyes off him even for a second.” She smiled.

“So what are your hobbies?”

“Apart from crying in the park, I usually like to travel.” She replied sheepishly.

“Great! Thanks to my profession, I have to travel a lot too. Did I mention before that your eyes are very pretty?” He put his hand over her hand. A crimson hue spread all over her face. He paid the bill and soon they were sitting inside a movie theater. After ten minutes, he put a hand around her and she was leaning on his shoulder. Throughout the movie she thought why was he doing all these stuff with her. Her ex never even bothered about such things. As the movie neared its end and the customary scene where the actor kisses the actress as they save the world from eternal doom, he caressed her forehead. Tears welled up in her eyes but she held them back.

After sometime, they were standing outside a big Archies store.

“What are we doing here?” She asked as they walked inside hand in hand.

“You will find out soon!” He smiled.

After ten minutes, they walked out of the store and she was holding a huge teddy bear, a valentine’s day and a birthday card.

“I am so happy right now and it’s all because of you!” She was no longer the sad and gloomy person she was about two hours ago.

“You can thank me later. Now hurry!” They were off to someplace in a cab. They joked and giggled like kids all the way. As she got off the cab she saw a well decorated church in front of her. A wedding was taking place. They blended among the relatives.

“Someday you will be standing there in a beautiful white dress.” He took her hand in between his hands. She smiled.

“I would love a spring wedding, a four-tier cake and an open roof reception too.” She winked at him.

“That’s the spirit!”

After the couple exchanged the vows and rings and kissed each other, they left the place with smile on their faces.

# To be contd.

The Boyfriend Experience #1

“All guys are pigs. I hate men now!” She thought as she wiped her tears with handkerchief.

“Why did he have to break up with me? Why now?” She tightened the grip on the metallic fence around the lake.

“He used me!” Her eyes went misty again.

“Excuse me! Are you okay?” She heard a deep voice.

“None of your God damn business!” She snarled at him.

“I am sorry! I didn’t mean to intrude…” He started walking away.

“Wait! I am sorry. I didn’t mean to shout at you. It’s just I had a bad break up recently and I feel devastated.” She looked at him.

Her heart skipped a beat. The guy had wonderful physique, blue eyes and looked dashing in his grey full sleeved t-shirt and blue denims.

“I am sorry to hear that!” He stopped.

“It’s okay! I have to move on now.” She looked away, bit her lower lip and thanked God.

“And how exactly are you going to do that?” He stood beside her. She could smell his cologne. Her infatuation reached to the next level that very instant.

“I don’t know. I don’t feel like doing anything.” She replied while looking at his hands. There were no rings on any of his fingers. “Jackpot!” she thought.

“I have an idea!” He smiled and looked at her.

“Oh! I don’t need your idea. I want you to ruin my lip gloss this very instant.” Her thoughts grew wilder every passing moment.

“This might seem completely irrational and a bit weird too. But, then you have to trust me on this.” He looked straight into her eyes.

“Direct! Hmm… That rickety old bench looks like a good place to give life to your idea. But I have to shoo away the old lady who keeps glaring at me!” She thought and looked at him with dreamy eyes.

“Go on!”

“For the next three hours, I want you to go wherever I take you, do whatever I ask you to do and reply to every question I ask. Let’s say it will be like a boyfriend experience. Deal?” He extended his hand towards her.

From his looks he didn’t appear like a rapist or an escaped convict.

“Okay, deal!” She gave him her hand too.

They started walking away from the lake.

“You didn’t say your name yet!” She asked him as he lead her.

“Let’s keep it that way! He winked. She blushed. They kept walking in silence.

To be contd.
